Alfred Kubin permanent exhibition "Dream and Reality"

After the original inn “Lohninghof” in Thumersbach, in the district of Zell am See, was supposed to be sold in 1998, the “Initiative Lohninghof” cultural association was founded in order to preserve this almost 1,000-year-old building as a meeting place. After an extensive renovation, the Lohninghof developed into a popular meeting place for those interested in culture.

"In terms of style, Alfred Kubin is considered to be an important representative of Expressionism. In the almost exclusive restriction to pen and ink drawings, he made the morbidity and dubiousness of existence and time visible."

The exhibition "Dream & Reality" in the Lohninghof is dedicated to Alfred Kubin, who spent part of his childhood in Zell am See and who returned to the Pinzgau again and again throughout his life. In some of his drawings, Kubin makes direct reference to Zell am See and there he experienced formative events.

Kubin later said about Zell am See: This small high mountain village is actually the main scene of my childhood. [...] I liked to lie on a sloping place on the lake shore or on the canal in the moor and looked for a long time into the transparent depths. "
