YOUR PERFECT AUTUMN HOLIDAY IN ZELL AM SEE-KAPRUN

YOUR PERFECT AUTUMN HOLIDAY IN ZELL AM SEE-KAPRUN

10.09.2025

QUESTIONS I ASKED MYSELF BEFORE MY TRIP

When I was planning my last autumn holiday in Zell am See-Kaprun, countless questions arose: When is the best time for autumn colours? Which hikes are still possible in October? And what to do if the weather doesn't play ball?

To save you the search, I have collected my most important questions & answers and hopefully make your travel planning easier!

1. WHEN IS AUTUMN AT ITS MOST BEAUTIFUL IN ZELL AM SEE-KAPRUN?

The foliage usually begins to change colour in mid-September and reaches its colourful peak in October. At the beginning of November, the landscape slowly turns into winter calm, but the first snowflakes may already be falling in the high mountains in October - perfect if you want to experience the mixture of autumn atmosphere and the first snow. Skiing here is usually possible from mid-October - pretty unique!

You can always find the latest weather here!

2. WHICH HIKES ARE PARTICULARLY WORTHWHILE IN AUTUMN?

I quickly realised: panoramic views and a mountain hut atmosphere are unbeatable in autumn.

My favourites:

  • High-altitude promenade on the Schmittenhöhe - easy, with views of the golden canopy of leaves.
  • Maiskogel round tour - wonderful round tour starting and finishing in Kaprun
  • Schwalbenwand round tour - summit climb with magnificent views

Insider tip: Ask on site or directly at the huts whether they are still open - many close at the end of October.

3. WHAT TO DO WHEN IT RAINS?

The good news? You certainly won't be bored! Because there's plenty to discover even when it's raining! On a grey autumn day, I relaxed in the TAUERN SPA Zell am See-Kaprun - warm pools, views of colourful forests. Or you can discover the shopping opportunities in the pedestrian zone of Zell am See or in the centre of Kaprun. For example, you have endless opportunities to shop for sportswear! A visit to a museum or gallery can also turn a rainy day into a real highlight and the many cosy cafés and bars invite you to linger - with a view of the lake or the mountains!

And because you're already wet anyway, take a rain poncho with you and discover the mystical atmosphere of the Sigmund Thun Gorge, a real natural spectacle!

You can find everything you need to know about the bad weather programme here!

4. Pardon? SKIING IN AUTUMN?

Yes, the ski season on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier often starts as early as mid-October. You can ski in the morning and go for a walk by the lake in the afternoon - definetly unique! So hope for some snow up there!

Insider tip: Even without skis, it's worth going up to the glacier at 3,000 metres with a perfect view at Austria's highest mountain!

5. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY AUTUMN HOLIDAY?

My packing list after a few "mistakes":

  • Onion look: fresh in the morning, mild at midday, cool in the evening
  • Rain jacket: weather sometimes changes quickly.
  • Sturdy shoes: Also worthwhile for easy walks
  • Swimsuits: For the spa or Zeller See (yes, some people still jump in in October - if you dare!). And if Mrs. Holle has already sent snow, don't forget your ski equipment!

Here are more packing tips depending on what type of holiday you are!

FURTHER QUESTIONS & ANSWERS THAT HELPED ME:

  1. What events take place in autumn? The tones of autumn-event series ensures that there is a lot going on in October - Zeller Wiesn, game-days, events on the mountain and at Lake Zell and the Cool Kids Festival ensure that everyone can discover their favourite event. Find them all here!
  2. Can you still do boat trips on Lake Zell? Yes, the boat trips on Lake Zell are open until 2 November - you can find all the information here.
  3. Is the Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card also worthwhile in autumn? Absolutely! The services are valid until the end of October! Find out here what you can experience with it.
  4. Is an autumn holiday suitable for families? Definitely - lots of easy hikes, excursions, adventure playgrounds, a thermal spa and children's events are on offer. All the information is summarised here.
  5. Where can I find the best photo spots? Honestly? Everywhere! The autumn sun over the lake offers the most beautiful light and the colourful forests around Lake Zell, the panoramic platform "Kaiserblick" on the Schmittenhöhe, the Top of Salzburg on the Kitzsteinhorn, the Sigmund Thun Gorge or the Kaprun Kaprun High Mountain Reservoirsare the most beautiful backdrops - turn on your camera and shoot!

MY CONCLUSION AFTER THE AUTUMN HOLIDAY

Autumn in Zell am See-Kaprun is like a secret treasure: fewer people, clear air, colours like something out of a painting - and yet so many possibilities. Whether you go hiking, enjoy wellness or soak up the last warm rays of sunshine by the lake: autumn is perhaps the most beautiful time to experience the region.
