Zell am See Star Advent

ADVENT & PRE- Christmas Time in Zell am See-Kaprun

"The air is icy cold. We can see our breath. The snow crunches beneath our well-lined winter boots as we stroll through the romantic pedestrian zone in Zell am See. The stars twinkle in the sky and their light reflects on the surface of Lake Zell. The lights and decorations show us the way and we look forward to warm up at the fire and enjoy hot mulled wine by the time we reach the forecourt of the Ferry Porsche Congress Center."

It is pre-Christmas season in Zell am See-Kaprun and the time of the Star Advent in and around this romantic, tranquil region of the Alps.

Save the dates ...

22nd of November - 24th of December 2018

The most tranquil and romantic time in Zell am See-Kaprun begins at the end of November when the entire region is dominated by the Star. Winter sports already attracts people during the day in this diverse region. The Kitzsteinhorn, the only glacier ski resort in the Salzburger Land, offers 100% snow-reliability and top piste conditions already in November. The picturesque alleys of Zell am See turn into an Advent Romantic Mile in the evenings. Elaborate decorations radiate a very special flair from the many stalls. Sample the hearty regional treats and admire traditional arts and crafts. The stars also accompany you along Lake Zell where beautiful decorations get you in the mood for the oncoming Christmas celebrations.

Tradition & Custom in Advent

The Krampus Run at the beginning of December starts the series of events. You might get quite a fright when wild-looking creatures with horns and bundles of birch branches run through the alleys of Zell am See. But not to worry, they might look wild but they won’t do any harm. A Christmas tree submerged 15 metres below the surface of Lake Zell is pulled up again by the members of the water rescue team during the annual Christmas Dive on 25th December. Accompanied by festive music, the divers build a circle of torches around the surfacing point and bring the Christmas tree back to the shores of Lake Zell. The New Year is welcomed with the celebratory Tresterer Dance at the town square of Zell am See and Twelfth Night at Kaprun Castle. Tresterer are “Schönperchten“, wearing precious garments and a crown decorated with golden ornaments and cock’s feathers. The dance performed by the Tresterer symbolises the banishment of evil spirits and the hope for a rich harvest as well as good luck and health in the coming year.

The advent time is the most beautiful time of the year. When the star advent takes place and everywhere there are little christmas lights, that means that Santa is coming soon. However, I do not like the Krampus, but I behaved well, so I do not need to be afraid of them.
