Tour description

With its 15 km, the KST offers a good introduction to alpine trail running, but with 1,000 metres of elevation gain and loss, it is definitely a challenge. Ninety percent of the KST runs along well-maintained hiking trails and is therefore not particularly difficult from a technical standpoint and quite feasible for runners with some mountain experience.

The Kaprun Scenic Trail starts at the GGUT Arena in Kaprun, Salzburger Platz. From there, it follows cycle paths for about 2 km into the valley with the first ascent to the Birkkogel, offering a great view of the Klammsee lake. After a short downhill section, the route circles around the Klammsee lake and climbs almost 1,000 metres to the Schneckenberg. It starts with a gentle ascent to the Schneckenreitalm, then becomes increasingly steep as it climbs the Jetzbachastensteig trail up to the ‘Ast'n’ at the highest point of the tour and the refreshment station at the Alpengasthof Glocknerblick (www.glocknerblick-kaprun.at) with great views of Kaprun and Zell am See as well as the "Großes Wiesbachhorn" and the Grossglockner. From there, the route is almost entirely downhill on well-maintained hiking trails, covering a difference in altitude of around 1,000 metres, back to Kaprun, finishing at the GGUT Arena in Kaprun, Salzburger Platz.
