This challenging stage leads over the Hundstein to Taxenbach, offering crisp air and spectacular views.
The Hundstein is known for its traditional Hundstein Ranggeln (cow fighting) and its magnificent panoramic views. At 26.5 kilometres and 1,437 metres of elevation gain, this stage is one of the most challenging on the long-distance hiking trail. However, the climb over the highest peak of the Salzburg Slate Alps is richly rewarded – with impressive panoramas and places to stop for refreshments at the Moosalm or the Statzerhaus. If weather conditions do not permit this stage, then we recommend this alternative route.

Route description:
The stage starts in the centre of Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße at the tourist information office. After crossing the Salzach river, the trail leads steadily uphill along forest paths, past Taxhof and Jageregg to Erlhofplatte, an idyllic high plateau with places to rest. From here, the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail crosses the slopes of Hahneckkogel and Breiter Kopf, offering beautiful views of the Salzach Valley and Lake Zell.
After the ice fountain, a hiking trail branches off towards Hundstein and leads over footbridges and narrow paths through the impressive landscape of the Adam and Eva lakes to the Toralm. Via the Moosalmhöhe, you continue to a saddle between Ochsenkopf and Hundstein. A final steep climb takes you to the Statzerhaus at the summit of the Hundstein – one of the most scenic points on the entire long-distance hiking trail.
The descent is on the opposite side towards Taxenbach via alpine paths, ridges and forest roads, past the Rieser Aste to the ‘Rieser Aste’ car park. From here, the stage can be shortened by taxi or you can continue on foot to the centre of Taxenbach, where the stage ends at the tourist information office.

Tips
This is a very long stage. There are several ways to shorten it or to stay overnight:
- Overnight stay at Moosalm (upmarket price and quality) about 1 hour 30 minutes below Hundstein
- Overnight stay at Statzerhaus (small, basic small mountain lodge) on the summit of the Hundstein
- Taxi from "Rieser Aste" car park about 40 minutes’ walk below the Rieser Aste (time saving of about 1 hour).
