More than 600 years of turbulent history
Even today the atmosphere of days long past is still palpable: entering time-honoured Kaprun Castle it feels like travelling into the past.
Medieval fair, festivals, concerts and guided tours are fascinating visitors. Salzburg's best medieval fair takes place in the end of july every year at castle Kaprun. Hundreds of reenactors show a time long gone. There are even concerts and festivals within the old historic walls. Castle Kaprun can be rented for events and weddings too!
Built in the 12th century
For today's visitors the castle is a real attraction, but for centuries it was proud possession and sanctuary of noble dynasties. The first documentary evidence of the castle goes back to the late 13th century. But the construction of the castle dates even further back: historians take it that the famous landmark of Kaprun had been erected by the noble family of the Counts of Falkenstein as early as the 12th century.
Until 1975 the castle witnessed turbulent times before it gradually entered into a state of decay. Eventually, the 'Burgverein' of Kaprun attended to a complete overhaul and had debris, rank growth, and signs of weathering removed. Since then the castle shines in its old splendour - and gives modern events a historic setting. The perfect symbiosis of the past and the present!
