HOHE TAUERN PANORAMA TRAIL | Stage 06: Hollersbach | Panorama Alm-Mittersill Hiking tours
Tour description
From Hollersbach over the Pass Thurn to the town of Mittersill to the most modern National Park Center in the Alps.
After a few days of long-distance hiking in the mountains at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, this stage takes place at a comparatively lower altitude. You hike from the herb and art village of Hollersbach, passing mountain farms and along the "Bee Educational Trail," ascending to the Pass Thurn. At just over 1,200 meters above sea level, this is the relatively low highest point of the stage. Traverse a beautiful high moor, a habitat for rare plant and animal species. Here, you can find all three carnivorous plants native to Austria: sundew, butterwort, and waterwheel. The path leads through picturesque forests and past charming mountain farms down to the valley to Mittersill.
There, you can explore the historic center and visit the remarkable National Park Center Hohe Tauern. This stage is not too long and provides the opportunity to gather strength for the upcoming challenges that will once again lead to the high ridges of the Kitzbüheler Alps.

Route description:
The first part follows the same path as yesterday through Hollersbach. From the village square, you pass by Feriengut Ottacherhof. Then turn left and immediately after the Panoramabahn Alpinresidenzen, turn right again! Continue past the sports field to the parking lot of the bathing lake and the bridge over the Salzach. Right after the bridge, turn right onto the narrow path and follow it initially along the railway tracks and then uphill to the asphalt road. To reach Thurnummerstall, turn left here and then take the right turn at the crossroads.
Follow the road uphill and adhere to the signage. It goes between Leitenbauernhof and Thurnummerstall to the right onto a hiking trail that leads in the same direction. Follow the path flat across a meadow and then slightly uphill through the forest until it meets a road again. Pass by Zimmeredthof and then follow the signs to the Bee Educational Trail. From here, the route follows the marked Bee Educational Trail uphill to the Panoramabahn parking lot.
At the beginning of the parking lot, turn right. Go through the underpass under the large road, reaching another parking lot on the other side of the road. At the end of the parking lot, turn left through the gate and follow trail No. 77 'Hochmoorrunde.' The short walk takes you idyllically through the impressive high moor Wasenmoos. At the end of Wasenmoos, turn left onto a gravel road and pass by a large farmhouse until you reach a junction before a bridge. Follow the field path (signposted as '71d Mittersill') to the right to a farmhouse. Great! When you pass through the gate, you reach a meadow path leading to another farm. Cross the road and go down the meadow into the forest. Follow the trail to the Pass Thurn federal road. Be cautious when crossing the busy road at the unclear point, and then turn left down the stepped path.
Cross the main road and do not continue along the road with a prohibition sign; instead, choose the gravel road down to a fork on the right. Stay left on trail No. 77 'Hochmoorrunde' and immediately turn right through a gate onto the short walk that takes you through the high moor Wasenmoos. At the end of Wasenmoos, turn left onto a gravel road, pass by a large farmhouse, and reach a junction before a bridge. Follow the field path (signposted as '71d Mittersill') to the right to a farmhouse. Turn left through the gate onto a meadow path, leading to a small road near another farm. Cross the road, go down the meadow into the forest, and on the trail to the Pass Thurn federal road.
Cross the busy road (be cautious, as it is somewhat unclear!) and descend left down the stepped path to a small asphalt road. Turn right downhill through two turns and a barrier, following from the left where a small road merges. Turn sharply left and follow the left road to a farmhouse. Behind the farmhouse, a hiking trail begins, leading you through the Rettenbachgraben to a meadow. Walk along the fence to a dirt road and follow it straight to another farmhouse. Behind the farmhouse, turn right on a meadow path and then along the field edge down to a gate. Continue down the meadow to the houses. There, you'll find a gravel road on the right, and after the first curve, immediately turn left down onto a meadow path leading into the forest (signposted as '63 IVV-Weg Mittersill'). This path goes through the forest and descends for a while! Then, a signpost directs you to the right through a gate onto a meadow. Follow the meadow path down to a small asphalt road and turn left towards Mittersill (788 m). Pass the train station and reach a major road. Turn right over the railway crossing, and then immediately turn right onto the bike and footpath, following it to a small parking lot on the left side. Across the parking lot, turn right into Lendstraße and shortly thereafter left into Hintere Lendstraße. Now you'll see a park area with an ornamental pond. Pass the pond through the area until you reach the National Park Center, your stage destination.
The Hohe Tauern National Park Center is definitely worth a visit! There, you can admire the 1,800 km² alpine adventure world! It includes the highest peaks in Austria, gigantic glacier regions, and a fauna and flora adapted to the alpine climate.
