HOHE TAUERN PANORAMA TRAIL | Stage 04: Wildkogel | GH Rechtegg/Neukirchen-Wildkogelhaus/Bramberg Hiking tours
Tour description
Enjoy a magnificent view of the Großvenediger mountain from the summit of the Frühmesser.
With an ascent of 1,230 metres, this stage is one of the more challenging hikes on the trail: it leads from Alpengasthof Rechtegg via the Frühmessers summit (2,233 m), which offers incredible views of the Großvenediger. The destination is the WIldkogelhaus below the Smaragdbahn cable car. Accommodation is available in all categories in Neukirchen and Bramberg. Due to renovation work, it will not be possible to stay overnight in the Wildkogelhaus in summer 2024. If weather conditions or personal constitution do not permit this stage, then the alternative route 04 Sonnenweg Neukirchen & Bramberg | Rechtegg-Bramberg is recommended.

Route description:
From the Alpengasthof Rechtegg you walk past the Pension Sonneck on the road about 200 m to the east, until hiking trail no. 55 "Sonnenweg" branches off in a right-hand bend. Follow the path for about 30 m and then follow the Sonnenweg at the same height or slightly descending for about 35-40 minutes until you reach a crossroads at a crossing. Here you leave the Sonnenweg (and also the alternative route described below) and ascend via a forest path ("Steineralm") quite steeply to a forest road. Follow the largest forest road for some time past the Steineralm (1.595 m) and along the valley to the Steiner Hinteralm (11b "Geigenscharte"). Here the road ends and you climb across beautiful alpine meadows just above the valley floor to the Geigenscharte (2.028 m).
Now you keep to the right hiking trail towards "Frühmesser", avoid a small rocky peak on the right via a new hiking trail and continue to ascend along the crest or just to the right of it until you reach the summit of the Frühmesser (2.233 m) with its large summit cross. You cross the summit and descend over the crest into a saddle between Frühmesser and Braunkogel, where you reach a driving path. You can use this to avoid Braunkogel to the left (east) - but our route takes us around Braunkogel on a narrow, beautiful path to the right. Therefore you go through a gate in the saddle and don't climb up the Braunkogel, but rather go around it on a narrow path on the right. Finally, you descend the ridge that leads south from the Braunkogel and reach the ski lift back on the road. Now follow the road downhill to the Guesthouse Wolkenstein and from there uphill again to the mountain station of the Wildkogel mountain lift.
If you stay overnight in Neukirchen, then you take the Wildkogel lift down into the valley (last descent at 16:30).
If you stay overnight in Bramberg or on the Wildkogelhaus, you can walk a few minutes further: Right behind the mountain station, the footpath to the Smaragdbahn begins at a cross with many signposts. You walk south of the crest to the east until you reach the top station of the Smaragdbahn after 15 minutes. If you stay overnight in Bramberg you can take the cable car down to the valley directly to Bramberg (last descent at 16:30).
If you stay overnight at the Wildkogelhaus, follow the footpath that starts directly below the mountain station downhill to the already visible Wildkogelhaus (2.000 m).
Here you can find out the opening times of the cable cars >>
