HOHE TAUERN PANORAMA TRAIL | Stage 03: Kröndlhorn | Königsleiten-GH Rechtegg/Neukirchen Hiking tours
Tour description
Crossing the Alps via the impressive Kröndlhorn mountain.
On the third day you cover 20 kilometres and the trail takes you up to 2,444 metres above sealevel. The highest point of the hike is the rocky double peak of the Kröndlhorn mountain, which stands out against the otherwise gentle green pastured mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps. There is a small memorial chapel rather than a summit cross at the highest point, and hikers enjoy stunning views of more than 70 three-thousand-metre peaks. The stage finishes at the Alpengasthof Rechtegg inn at 1,278 metres altitude above the National Park village of Neukirchen am Großvenediger. If weather conditions, such as snow at high altitudes during low season, or level of fitness do not permit stage 2 of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail, then we recommend the following alternative route:
Alternative route 03 Sonnenweg | Königsleiten-GH Rechtegg/Neukirchen.

Route description:
From the start of the stage at the Spar market by the church, you walk up the village street to the west and then in a right-hand loop to the valley station of the mountain lifts. Pass this station and the adjacent garages for snow groomers - behind it the hiking trail towards the Salzach hut starts. You follow the path into the valley and choose the right one at a fork in the road. Behind a stable building a hiking trail branches off to the right immediately afterwards. Follow this trail down to the Salzach river, which is still very small at this point - it originates at the far end of the valley below the Salzachgeier - and continue on the other side up again to a driveway. Follow it back into the valley past the Salzach hut (refreshment stop) to a junction. Here, a hiking trail branches off to the right between the two driveways, which you follow uphill and soon back down the valley to the Salzachalm. Here begins another trail that takes you to the Salzachjoch (1.983 m) with its small church Markkirchl (just before it, disregard a left turn towards Salzachgeier).
Now avoid the road that leads downhill on the other side, but turn right towards Nadernachjoch/Tristkopf and walk up the path for a few meters and then turn left to the Nadernachjoch (2.100 m). Now you follow the signs to the left towards Kröndlhorn, first along the fence and then the increasingly steeper summit flank across the climb up to the small saddle that separates the double peaks of the Kröndlhorn (2.444 m).
You ascend a few more meters on the right until you reach a small chapel on the left just below the summit of the Kröndlhorn. This path is quite steep at first and later becomes increasingly gentle as you descend to the Trattenbach-Hochalm. Here begins a path that takes you out of the valley to the Trattenbachalm (1.732 m).
Just behind the Trattenbachalm, a beautiful forest and meadow path branches off to the right, which will take you down into the valley as a shortcut to the driveway. At the level of the Sonntag-Grundalm opposite you reach the road again, you can shorten the next bend once more on a hiking trail and follow the road out of the valley to the Alpengasthof Rechtegg, your today’s stage destination.
