Hohe Tauern Bike Trail | ET06 Fusch | Ponyhofalm | Kaprunertal | Kaprun Bike Tour

Easy Closed

Tour description

Between Alpine pleasures and panoramic views – a tour with views and challenge.

Sporty elevation gain and outstanding scenery: this stage differs slightly from the other stages of the Hohe Tauern Bike Trail. Although, as with the other stages, one of the Tauern valleys – the Kaprun Valley – is visited, the defining feature here is the fairly steep climb up to the Ponyhofalm and the alpine track high above the valleys towards Kaprun.Attention: anyone riding an e-MTB should manage their battery carefully – ideally avoiding continuous use of the highest assistance level. Official charging options along the route are scarce, so riding with foresight is strongly recommended.

Route description:
The start of this stage is in Fusch, exactly at the end point of the previous stage. From here, you initially head towards Bruck, following the separate cycle path along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. After a short while you reach the petrol station again – here you need to cross the road. On the opposite side, the cycle path leads over a bridge across the Fuscher Ache; immediately afterwards you turn left. From this point on, the route follows a combined pedestrian and cycle path along the river towards Bruck.

After around 2 kilometres, it’s time to cross the road again. From here you leave the familiar route along the Grossglockner road: turn left into the small road and follow the MTB signs towards Ponyhofalm and Imbachhorn. Shortly afterwards you reach a fork – continue straight ahead. After a few metres, turn left onto a gravel road and continue to follow the signs for Ponyhofalm and Imbachhorn. The surface remains gravel throughout. After passing a cattle grid, the steady climb begins. The route is easy to ride, clearly signposted and leads uphill without any major junctions.

The climb to the Ponyhofalm is around 2.2 km long and ascends steadily via several switchbacks – sometimes steeper, sometimes more comfortable. You repeatedly cross the line of the material cableway, and smaller hiking paths branch off to the left and right.

However, you always stay on the main track and follow the signs. Shortly before reaching the hut, you pass two small shelters and a pond.

Once at the top, the rustic Ponyhofalm invites you to take a well-earned break – a perfect place to recharge your batteries and enjoy a cool drink.

Afterwards, the route continues behind the Ponyhofalm towards Bruck via the Brucker Berg. Immediately after the hut, a short but steep section of around 200 metres awaits, which only experienced riders can manage without dismounting – many riders choose to push their bikes here. You then reach the next junction, where you keep right, following the Brucker Berg loop.

Soon a sign announces: “Highest point reached” – a great moment to pause and catch your breath. The route now alternates between downhill and gentle uphill sections on a well-rideable gravel road, always marked with MTB signs and the label “Brucker Berg Runde”. Along the way, impressive views repeatedly open up over Lake Zell, the Fusch Valley and the surrounding mountains. The track winds downhill in switchbacks until you reach the junction towards Kaprun: the left turn leads towards Kaprun, marked KA10. You now continue towards Kaprun for about 2 km through a beautiful forest until you reach the start of a 400-metre singletrack section. The trail promises a short adrenaline kick over roots and rocks; less experienced riders should push their bikes here.

Afterwards, you return to a pleasant forest road before a slightly rougher gravel track leads out of the woods. From there, the ride becomes more relaxed again on a tarmac road heading towards the centre. After the Guggenbichlweg, turn into Schiedstraße and then follow Imbachstraße directly to the Kaprun municipal offices. Turn left there into the town centre. Right on Salzburgerplatz, the “Pavillon” is a tempting first stop for refreshments. Otherwise, continue cycling towards the Klammsee. Pass the Pavillon at the tourist office, cross the bridge on the right and turn into Schulstraße. From here, you can follow the Tauern Cycle Path signs to the Alpenhaus Kesselfall. Along the way, it’s well worth stopping at the Klammsee and the Klammseestüberl.

Tip: if you fancy a refreshing cool-down, visit the nearby Sigmund Thun Gorge. From the turning point of your stage at the Alpenhaus Kesselfall, you return along the same route back to the centre.
