High-altitude hike from Sonnkogel to Schüttdorf Hiking tours
Tour description
A scenic high-altitude hike from Sonnalm via Schmittenhöhe to Schüttdorf – with views of 30 three-thousand-metre peaks and numerous places to stop for refreshments along the way.
The route begins with the ascent on the Sonnenalm and Sonnkogel cable cars and leads from the Sonnkogel via the panoramic high-altitude promenade to the Schmittenhöhe. Along the adventure trail, information boards, panoramic platforms and telescopes offer impressive views of the Schmitten as far as the Schmittenhöhebahn mountain station. At the summit, at 1,965 metres, you can enjoy views of 30 three-thousand-metre peaks and the Sisi Chapel. The descent leads via the Pinzgauer Spaziergang to the Kettingalm and on via the Pfaffenkendelsteig to the Pinzgauer Hütte. Via the Schmittenwanderweg and the Areitweg, the tour finally leads past several places to stop for refreshments back down into the valley to the valley station of the areitXpress.

Route description:
From the Sonnkogel mountain restaurant you follow the high altitude promenade (no 68). There are many informative charts, panoramic platforms and surprise stations for children. The path continues along Salersbachköpfl and leads to Hochzelleralm and further up to the Schmittenhöhe. From the peak you can enjoy a view to thirty 3.000 m high mountains and the Sisi-chapel. Afterwards follow the path no 719 towards the Kettingalm along meadows to Pfaffenkendelsteig no 69. (Overnight stay possible at Pinzgauerhütte). At the end of the 1,5 km romantic path one reaches the Areit- or Schmittenhöhe pat (no 50). From mountain restaurant Glockneralm the path joins the Areitweg (no 51, 51A). Further to the mountain restaurant Areitalm (descent possible by areitXpress), to Schoberalm (restaurant) and down to the bottom station of the areitXpress.
