Ice Bathing in Lake Zell: A Mindful Winter Experience in Zell am See-Kaprun

Mist lies over Lake Zell. Behind the white veils, the Kitzsteinhorn briefly appears, then fades again into the muted winter light. Early morning in Thumersbach, minus three degrees. Five people stand at the water’s edge, in swimwear, some wearing hats against the cold. In front of them, dark, clear water, almost black. Someone says quietly, “This is crazy.” Then they move forward. Together.

TWO MINUTES IN THE HERE AND NOW

Daniela Bily stands in the middle of the group. Calm, attentive, focused. The yoga teacher and dance educator has been guiding ice bathing sessions for several years, both in Zell am See-Kaprun and in Vienna. It all began after a surfing trip to Morocco. Wanting to maintain her connection to the water even in winter led her to the Old Danube. What started as an experiment became a habit, and from that habit a conscious path emerged: accompanying people as they become aware of their own limits and gently shift them.

Entering the cold water is the decisive moment. Breathing becomes shallow, the heart beats faster. Now concentration matters. “Breathe out longer than you breathe in,” Daniela explains calmly. Those who focus their attention on their breathing make it through the first seconds. The pace of entering the water is crucial: not rushed, but without hesitation. The cold is felt most intensely around the abdomen. Hands remain outside the water, as the nerves there react particularly sensitively.

After about a minute, something changes. Perception becomes clearer, thoughts recede. Two minutes are enough to experience this state.

WHY ICE BATHING WORKS

In recent years, ice bathing has evolved from a niche practice into a regular ritual for many. Some seek a brief adrenaline rush, others a conscious counterbalance to constant stress and sensory overload. The cold stimulus acts directly on the body: circulation increases, metabolism is activated, and feel-good hormones are released.

With regular practice, many report improved sleep, greater resilience to stress and a more stable sense of physical wellbeing. Ice bathing combines physical activation with mental focus. Its effect does not come from performance, but from attention.

ICE BATHING IN ZELL AM SEE-KAPRUN

Zell am See-Kaprun offers a distinctive setting for ice bathing. At the Thumersbach lakeshore, for example, with views towards the Kitzsteinhorn, lake, mountain and glacier come together within a very small space. The clear water lies calm at their feet, the mountain rises above it, the glacier behind – vast, steady, silent. In this setting, attention turns inward. The focus becomes small: one breath, then the next. In guided sessions, the experience begins consciously – with yoga, breathing exercises and time to arrive, before entering the water together.

Beyond these organised formats, ice bathing in Zell am See-Kaprun also takes place on a smaller scale, such as through hotel offerings or individually, well prepared and with respect for nature. What matters is not the format, but mindfulness in dealing with cold, body and surroundings.

The group often plays an important role. Together, taking the step becomes easier. Trust develops, calm is shared. In recent years, almost all participants have made their way into the water – supported by the clear structure and the atmosphere of the place.

BACK AT THE SHORE

After leaving the water, the group stands quietly at the shore. Soaking wet in sub-zero temperatures. Passers-by walk past warmly wrapped up. The body generates heat on its own, the skin tingles, the gaze feels alert. Many describe this moment as surprisingly calm. A sense of clarity that is neither loud nor insistent.

What remains is less a rush of euphoria than a clear awareness of the body. Breathing finds its own rhythm, thoughts settle, the surroundings suddenly feel closer. The lake lies still, the mountains provide a sense of grounding. For many, it is precisely this transition – from cold water back to land – where the effect of ice bathing becomes most tangible.

Ice bathing is neither a competition nor a trend one has to follow. In Zell am See-Kaprun, it becomes a conscious experience – supported by nature, tranquillity and clear structure. Those who engage with it experience winter from a new perspective: more focused, more immediate, closer to themselves.
