St. Barbara´s Chapel

Barbarakapelle, Barbarastraße 7, 5710 Kaprun

The Barbarakapelle in Kaprun commemorates the workers who built the Kaprun power plants and invites visitors to pause in silence. Consecrated in 1955, this modest chapel at the edge of the workers’ settlement is a poignant place of memory and local history.

At the southwestern edge of Kaprun, within the former workers’ settlement, stands the Barbarakapelle – a quiet place of remembrance. Built in 1953/54 to the designs of architect Fidelius Schmid and consecrated in 1955 by Archbishop Andreas Rohracher, it honors the workers of the Kaprun power plants who lost their lives. Inside, a sealed scroll bearing their names is kept and brought out each year on St. Barbara’s Day for a memorial service. With its simple design, pointed roof, and altar painting by Erwin Exner, the chapel unites architecture, faith, and history. Today, it is a listed heritage site.
