The most beatiful photo spots of the Zell am See-Kaprun region

Glacier, Mountain and Lake

It should be easy actually when a holiday region comprises of glacier, mountain and lake. There should be plenty of opportunities to take great pictures and capture impressions. It is of course not that easy to find the best photo spots when there are attractions and excursion destination in abundance. This is why I am showing you my absolute favourite spots.

The reservoir pond at the Plettsaukopf is definitely one of the classics among “my” photo spots. It was created as water reservoir for artificial snowmaking and nestles in a stunning landscape high above Lake Zell. “High” is relative as the pond is halfway between the town and the Schmittenhöhe and is an hour’s walk away from the town centre. The reservoir pond can even be reached within a few minutes if you take the cable car to the middle terminus, which makes this also an excellent spur-of-the-moment photo spot. This spot is especially perfect for a sunrise tour, offering stunning views across the Hohe Tauern and Lake Zell. If you don’t want to rise that early, then go on a tour to the Plettsaukopf during the day. You will pass plenty of great spots for excellent photos and impressions!

The Imbachhorn is a must on the list of best photo spots of any local from Kaprun. This is surely one of the region’s most beautiful places even if it is not as easily accessible as the reservoir pond at the Plettsaukopf. The Imbachhorn towers high above the Zell am See-Kaprun region and offers priceless views across the Zell Basin and the lake. The mountain is in front of the bigger and higher mountains of the Hohe Tauern, thus also offering amazing panoramic views to the snow-covered peaks of the national park of the same name. Plan around 4 hours for the summit ascent, especially when you consider the many great photo spots along the way where you stop and press the release button. TIP: If you ascend to the Gleiwitzerhütte the day before and spend the night there, then you will be able to reach the summit within 45 minutes the next morning and you get the chance to enjoy an extraordinary sunrise panorama. Then it’s back to the hut for “breakfast with a view” on the terrace. Heart, what more could you desire?

And yet another classic for fans of sophisticated photography. The Sigmund Thun Gorge is located in Kaprun and offers more than 300 metres of an unbelievable spectacle of nature of water, rocks and gravity. The water of the Kaprun Ache has been forcing its way through the rocks here for thousands of years, creating a very special photo spot indeed. The gorge is more than 30 metres steep at some points and offers refreshment especially on hot summer days. The gorge is reached via interesting boardwalks and bridges; thus, you can fully focus on great photos and cool impressions. To me, this is a very special powerful place and cool photo spot where you can always take amazing pictures.

My last photo spot which I would like to share with you is not only for me a real classic. I am never alone when I take pictures at the slopes and mountains above Thumersbach at the eastern shores of Lake Zell. Great pictures can be taken and impressions of the town and the lake can be captured especially in the afternoons and evenings when the sun sets in the west behind the Schmittenhöhe. Standing at the Ronachkopf in the evening and enjoying the view - what a wonderful end to the day. The Enzianhütte, along the way from Thumersbach in direction Hundstein, is perfect for a culinary stop. Apropos Hundstein; if you continue your way in direction summits, then you can be sure to pass many other unbeatable photo spots high above Thumersbach. The panorama is simply amazing: wonderful mountain hills in front, Lake Zell as colourful contrast and the rugged slopes and snow-covered peaks of the Hohe Tauern as backdrop. Taking pictures here is real fun!T
