IONICA - FASCINATION E-MOBILITY

Sebastian Vitzthum makes time for a talk

If an event organiser makes time for a good talk just one month before the premiere of his event, then this is something very special indeed. Sebastian Vitzthum is such a special event manager; just as special as the IONICA, the green mobility event which is staged in Zell am See-Kaprun for the first time from 21 - 24 June 2018.If an event organiser makes time for a good talk just one month before the premiere of his event, then this is something very special indeed. Sebastian Vitzthum is such a special event manager; just as special as the IONICA, the green mobility event which is staged in Zell am See-Kaprun for the first time from 21 - 24 June 2018.

Friday morning, it is busy in and around Zell am See

Luckily, I remembered the basic idea of IONICA and didn’t take my car today. It is a beautiful spring day and I am out and about by bicycle. It would have taken some time to find a parking space around the IONICA office. This makes it even more interesting to look into the basic idea of IONICA in more detail. “Busy” is also the atmosphere at the IONICA headquarter. Sebastian and his colleague, Nikolina, are on the phone, writing emails and are planning and organising. And yet, Sebastian is happy to see me and makes time for an extensive talk about IONICA; about what it stands for, how the idea was developed and why it takes place in Zell am See-Kaprun.

Love, but not at first sight

Sebastian has not always been interested in electromobility and alternative drive systems. As he says himself, he is a “petrol head”. As a fan of high speeds, he was a professional competitive skier in the USA and drove motorbike races for a long time. He often touched the limit and has always been interested in performance and subjects like the “perfect drive system”. Sebastian explains it like this: If you would build a high-performance vehicle with maximum power and capacity, you would, in his opinion, have to use an E-motor instead of a combustion engine. Thus, the perfect drive system can, in his opinion, only be an electrical one – this is one of the many other reasons why the idea for IONICA continued to grow in Sebastian’s head since 2010.

It’s not just about the environment and resources

IONICA positions itself as Austria’s biggest green event. But it would be wrong to limit the event to the topic of environment and resources only - IONICA is much more than that. Raising awareness and showing that there is more than petrol and diesel, this is what is primarily on Sebastian’s mind. The event is about suitable alternatives for tomorrow and beyond and demonstrating the possibilities in the area of E-mobility already available today. Many people do not know about what is possible when it comes to mobility and transport. Sebastian is convinced: “We are in the middle of a big social awakening. The breakthrough of E-mobility is imminent. Many people are starting to change their way of thinking …!”

Earth | Water | Air

With these three keywords, which are also the USP of IONICA, Sebastian answered my question why the event is staged in Zell am See and not somewhere else. Apart from the fact that he comes from the region, this top event can only take place at the shores of Lake Zell. There are not many places where you can demonstrate mobility highlights in the air, on water and onshore as perfectly as at the lakeside of Lake Zell. In addition, the region and the tourism association quickly realised that IONICA is a top event worth supporting and that Zell am See-Kaprun is the only place for staging the event. Apart from the scenically unique features which are the basis for an exciting event weekend, the region’s long history of generating sustainable electricity through hydropower also stands out. With the Tauernkraftwerke power stations, the Zell am See-Kaprun region set the course of the direction, in which the most efficient form of mobility will go one day, a long time ago. Valuable synergies and positioning effects are the results for the entire region. “It is definitely time to point out the way and to get people interested in the many great possibilities now and in future”, says Sebastian and is visibly proud of being the head behind the biggest green event ever staged in Austria

Sebastian’s helpers

Sebastian mentions several times that he is not the only one responsible for IONICA. Although he and his friend Alexander Höller had the idea and vision in 2010 already, it took a big team of fantastic people to realise the project. Up to 50 people are responsible for the planning and organising of IONICA, an additional 100 volunteers will help out during the event. Sebastian is glad to have so many great people around him; people who share his vision and work hard on the realisation of the biggest green event of all times. The funding of the budget for the event comes from a number of excellent and renowned partners and sponsors. The realisation of the event as it stands now would not have been possible without them.

No-one of the IONICA team sees themselves as a do-gooder, especially not Sebastian. This is about presenting useful alternatives to the status quo and to raise awareness of tomorrow’s mobility. This also includes of course a certain change or adjustment of our mobility behaviour as such. E-mobility is surely not the solution to all problems caused by increasing traffic, pollution of the environment and fine particulate pollution. The awareness of innovative transport systems and a change in our behaviour must be urgently created and supported.

So, highlight the date of IONICA from 21 – 24 June 2018 in your calendar and come along. As Sebastian told me, there is plenty to see, to try and to experience – for the entire family. Culinary delights are also provided and admission to the event is free. I look forward to IONICA in June as a first-time event which will definitely change our mobility awareness. Thank you for the very interesting and nice talk, Sebastian Vitzthum. It has yet again reminded me that everyone has to start at their own doorstep. As I was out and about by bicycle in beautiful weather and did not have to look for a parking space, I gave myself a big pad on the shoulder!

See you at IONICA from 21 - 24 June 2018 in Zell am See-Kaprun!
