Kilimanjaro – the song of the porters
Multimedia Show by Dr. Wolfgang Melchior in the Meixnerhaus Kaprun
Dr. Wolfgang Melchior accepts the invitation of his friend Ronaldo, who wants to show him "his" mountain. Ronaldo is a local mountain guide and chief guide on Kilimanjaro. Countless times he stood on the roof of Africa. For him, Kilimanjaro has a special meaning. “The mountain is unique. He is the focus of my life. He gives me work, feeds me and my family. Without Kilimanjaro my life would be very difficult.” Until modern times, Kilimanjaro was only known to the rest of the world as a rumor. For the locals, however, the mountain has been the center of their existence and their faith for as long as anyone can remember. For them, Kilimanjaro is a good, almost sacred mountain. It is the origin and symbol of their lives, it is the landmark of their homeland, which only disappears after many days' marching. The ascent of Kilimanjaro has remained the epitome of travel and adventure on the black African continent to this day. Nourished by myths and legends, it lures countless mountaineers every year to hike through a fantastic world. The almost 40 kilometers from the sweltering heat of the savannah up to the icy air of the poles correspond to a climatic journey of 10,000 kilometers.
