More than 2,000 events between late August and late October: The "Bauernherbst" autumn festival takes place throughout the Salzburg province during harvest time. It is not only enjoyed by locals, but also attracts tourists from all over the world.
When the days are getting shorter, the temperature drops a little and the harvest is brought in from the mountain pastures, then the "Bauernherbst" autumn festival is near. Many mountain people relied on their own produce as the basis of their existence for a very long time. Hence it was no surprise that they were in a celebratory mood at the end of a fruitful summer - this is how the "Bauernherbst" festival was born.

During the "Bauernherbst" autumn festival the regional events calendar is especially dense with countless farmer's markets, farmer's breakfasts and marching bands. The festival is guaranteed to have something in store for everyone. Autumn is also the ideal time of year for hikes in our diverse mountain environment. Once you have reached the summit, you can relax your weary feet in rustic mountain huts that offer regional culinary specialities.
The "Bauernherbst" cheese festival in Zell am See-Kaprun
Attention cheese enthusiasts! Kaprun plays host to a cheese festival at the end of September, which means delicious cheese specialities will be at the centre of attention for a whole week. The "Pinzgauer" cheese, a regional traditional delicacy, is particularly well-known. Furthermore, Zell am See-Kaprun also boasts two mountain fairs, on the "Maiskogel" and the "Schmitten" respectively. The highlight of every mountain fair is the "Ranggel" (traditional wrestling) tournament - an ancient custom of the Pinzgau area.
The packed schedule also includes a farmer's market that showcases regional craftsmanship and local delicacies. Every Friday you can sample and purchase the regional specialities on the town square of Zell. Some farmers also offer the possibility to buy their purchase straight from the farm. Further culinary delights are supplied by the official "Bauernherbst" restaurants.
